Shopping in Barcelona
Although not as famously fashionable as Paris or Milan, Barcelona, Spain is certainly among Europe's cities of style and an excellent place to go shopping. Most of the mainstream stores in Barcelona can be found on a stretch of streets in the city center from the waterfront leading up La Rambla through Placa de Catalunya and on up Passeig de Gracia. At Avinguda Diagonal take a left turn, and follow the shops as far as Placa de la Reina Maria. The Diagonal is filled with shops, providing an entire day worth of browsing in just this one area.
Some other shopping areas in central Barcelona are Passeig and Gracia and the streets to its southwest. Take your Barcelona rental car through streets such as Carrer de la Portaferrissa, Carrer de la Boqueria, Carrer del Call, Carrer de la Libreteria and Carrer de Ferran, and around Placa de Sant Josep Oriol.
Aside from the small independent shops and specialty stores there are also a number of department stores, perfect for bargain-hunters. The best seasonal sales begin on 10 January and again in summer on 5 July. The big department stores such as El corte Ingles and shopping complexes, such as El Triangle, tend to open from 9AM through 9 or 10PM at night.
